The latest like-for-like grocery price inflation increased to 2.3% in the four weeks to 6 September 2026, which is a faster rate of increase than the previous month, but is still considered to be relatively subdued by Worldpanel by Numerator, which produced and published the data.

The period covered by the data covers the end of summer holidays and back to school, which Worldpanel by Numerator links to a shift in shopping habits, noting 18 million fewer shopping trips by grocers in the month compared with a peak of 497 million in July.

School uniforms are a key item in this period and the data shows a reduction in spend of 12.4% compared with last year to an average spend of £54.53 (€64.15).

Market share

Tesco remains the largest supermarket in the UK, though its share of the market has slipped from 28.1% a year ago to 27.8% in the four weeks to 6 September this year.

Sainsbury’s remains in second place with 15.2% of the market, the same as it had last year, while Asda is third with 11.5% market share. This is down on the 11.8% it had in the same period last year, despite a small increase in the latest four-week period over the previous four weeks.

Aldi remains in fourth place with 10.6% of the grocery market, which is down 0.2% year on year, while Lidl, with 8.7% of the market, has overtaken Morrisons, which remains on an 8.4% share of the market.
