On Tuesday, Drumshanbo Mart held its special show and sale of bull weanlings.
Bull weanlings met a solid demand, with mostly farmer buyers active on the night.
Lighter bulls weighing under 300kg saw a better trade for the top half of weanlings, while those weighing between 300kg and 400kg saw a more even average across the sale.
Bulls weighing between 300kg and 400kg sold to an average of €5/kg, even with the top third averaging €5.57/kg.
Lighter bulls weighing under 300kg sold to an average of €5.16/kg, while the top third peaked at an average of €6.09/kg, with the bottom third of bull weanlings averaging €4.30/kg on the night.
Heavier bulls were not as plentiful as the lighter weanlings, as average-quality lots sold between €4.70/kg and €4.85/kg, while the top third averaged over the €5/kg.
Mart manager Eoin Kane said: “We had a nice show of quality bulls, with keen demand from farmers for Charolais and Limousin-cross bulls weighing from 280kg to 350kg.
“There was plenty of bulls selling from €5/kg up to the top-quality lads crossing the €6/kg mark. Some poorer-quality and more traditional-bred cattle fell short of the €5/kg mark.”
