Watch: beef bullocks sell for equivalent of €7/kg deadweight in Ennis Mart

Over 35% of the 638 bullocks on offer in Ennis Mart’s bullock sale on Friday were heavy types weighing in excess of 600kg.

Manager Martin McNamara reported that any slaughter-fit animals met keen demand and noted that prices paid for such animals were the equivalent of €7/kg deadweight.

MartBids analysis shows bullocks weighing 600kg-plus averaged €3.86/kg, with the top third of bullocks selling for an average price of €4.17/kg with a significant percentage of bullocks weighing over 700kg crossing the €3,000/head mark.

Bullocks weighed as high as 1,020kg, with an aged Charolais-cross bullock at that weight and born 03/05/23 selling for €3,850 (€3.77/kg).

Quality stores

There was a keener appetite for quality store bullocks. Bullocks weighing 500kg to 600kg sold for an average price of €4.18/kg, ranging from €3.67/kg for the bottom third of animals to €4.71/kg for the top third of animals.

Top prices ranged from €4.80/kg to €4.90/kg for a dozen super-quality bullocks with age and quality on their side.

Prices paid for lighter store bullocks weighing 400kg to 500kg were up 10c/kg compared with the previous week, with the top third averaging at €5.19/kg.

The average price was €4.37/kg, with the bottom third selling for €3.51/kg. The latter included Friesian bullocks, which sold from €3/kg to €3.30/kg and Angus- and Hereford-crosses which sold in the main from €3.40/kg to €3.80/kg.
