On Tuesday Roscommon Mart held its annual show and sale of weanlings where some 430 weanlings went under the hammer with 95% of them selling on the night.

On the night, 129 of the bulls on offer weighed between 300kg and 400kg, with the top third of these selling to an average of €5.89/kg, while the 129 bulls averaged €5.37/kg with the bottom third selling for an impressive €4.84/kg.

“We had a great show of weanlings, especially the bulls, there was some super quality bulls sold on the night a credit to the farmers breeding them. Look they're back on the highs of last year but your quality bull is still selling from €5.50 to €6/kg with some lots crossing the €6/kg” said Tony Conry, Mart manager.

Tony added: “We had a number of shippers around the ring and there buying most of the bulls, they're not as keen for the heavier bulls as they were last year, bulls weighing around the 350kg mark are the sweet spot to be selling.”

As you go up the weights, the price per kilo paid is falling, however the top third of bulls weighing between 400kg and 450kg still sold to an average of €5.74/kg only 15c/kg behind the same bulls weighing between 300kg and 400kg.
