Well-known Limerick-based maize specialists Samco has showcased a new maize header to the Irish public for the first time. Steeped in the maize industry, with its unique drill that sows maize under film, Samco has been importing and selling used maize headers to its customers for many years. The company explained that it has spent the past five years developing a new maize header with a large Chinese manufacturer. Through this partnership, Samco has the distribution rights for the header in Ireland, the UK and Chile, while the Chinese manufacturer is retailing the header across all the other countries.

Samco says it has six new headers sold in Ireland, while its Chinese partner has now retailed 500 headers. Samco said the header is coming in six, eight and 10-row versions. It notes that the six-row machine is competitively priced at €52,000 plus VAT. When asked why they went down this route, Samco said the reason its introducing these lower price headers is that many of its customers have very old headers that are worn out, and they can’t afford to invest in new, premium brand headers, as they aren’t cutting enough acres in comparison to other countries in Europe.
