All-Ireland titles for Donegal Sheep breeders in Athlone

Beltex Sheep breeders from across the country travelled to Athlone Agricultural Show recently for the 30th anniversary all-Ireland Beltex Sheep Breeders National Show. The event provided a memorable celebration of Ireland’s premier double-muscled breed, with a tremendous display of quality stock and strong competition throughout the classes.

The coveted Supreme Champion title was awarded to Donegal breeders Jack and Sean O’Brien for their outstanding Shearling Ewe, Aileach View Love Me or Leave Me. Having secured the female champion earlier in the day, this powerful ewe went on to claim the highest honour of the day under judges Victoria and John Ferguson.

Standing Reserve Supreme Champion was the impressive senior ram lamb exhibited by fellow Donegal breeder Kyle McCandless. This ram lamb enjoyed a remarkable day in the show ring, winning the overall ram lamb championship and supreme male champion before being tapped out as reserve overall champion.

The young Donegal man put on a standout performance, also securing first place in the Young Stockperson competition.

In the individual classes, Joe Hargrove won a strong Senior Ram class ahead of Aaron James and Brian Mathews. The Senior Ewe class was won by Brian Mathews, with Michael Oliver taking second place and John Maher finishing third.

John Maher finished in pole position in the Junior Ram Lamb class and featured prominently throughout the day’s competition, recording several high placings, while Brian Mathews secured first place in the Junior Ewe Lamb class.

Commercial classes were also keenly contested, as Brian Mathews claimed victory in both the Factory Lamb and Butchers Lamb categories, demonstrating the commercial appeal and carcase qualities for which the Beltex breed is renowned.
