As young breeders and multi-generation family herds take centre stage at this year's FBD National Dairy Show in Millstreet, Co Cork, the event is also shining a light on one of the biggest challenges facing Irish dairy farming, succession.

According to the Irish Holstein Friesian Association (IHFA): "A recent survey found that one in three Irish farmers intend to exit the sector within five years, with half of those planning to leave having no successor identified.

"Some 60% of farmers surveyed said they are fearful of even raising the subject of succession within their own families."

Many of the herds represented at this year's show have been built up across several generations.

For these families, the question of who carries that work forward is no longer a distant one, it is a live conversation happening on farms across the country.

The national dairy show is a great place for young people to grow their enthusiasm for farming. From the latest in farm tech, a strong industry network and a focus on celebrating our cows, there is lots to catch the attention.

League finals

The IHFA Young Members Association (YMA) showmanship league finals represent the culmination of months of dedication, commitment and competition for young breeders from across the country.

Throughout the summer, competitors travel extensively to agricultural shows and events nationwide, working to accumulate the required 24 qualification points needed to secure their place in the prestigious final, held at the national dairy show.

By competing against some of the highest standards of showmanship at each qualifying event, participants demonstrate not only their livestock handling skills, but also their passion, perseverance and sportsmanship. Reaching the finals is a significant achievement, reflecting a season of hard work and determination by each competitor.

IHFA's YMA showmanship league and focus farm programme both play a direct role in addressing this challenge. By giving young handlers a competitive platform through the YMA and by showcasing progressive family farms through the focus farm walks, the association is actively building the next generation of breeders, rather than simply describing the problem.

This year's showmanship league finals take place on Friday 9 October, alongside the champion and reserve champion handler classes, giving visitors a firsthand look at the young talent coming through the ranks.
