The majority of farmers have not taken a week-long holiday in the last year, according to a reader survey carried out by the Irish Farmers Journal.
Of the 1,066 respondents to the survey, only 40% said they had left the farm for seven days or more in the last 12 months.
Cattle finishers were least likely to have taken a seven-day holiday in the last 12 months, with 66% saying they hadn’t left the farm for more than a week.
Sheep farmers followed closely behind, with 63% stating they had not taken a holiday in the last year, with a similar percentage of suckler farmers (62%) saying the same.
Dairy farmers
Some 56% of dairy farmers reported not taking a holiday from the farm in the last year.
Tillage farmers were most likely to take a holiday, with 53% saying they had done so.
Farmers responses were very much consistent across the four provinces, with Munster farmers most likely to take a holiday of seven days or more (41%), and Connacht farmers least likely to take a holiday, at 38%.
