Wexford farmland made close to €30,000 an acre on Tuesday, following an intense auction. The 45.5-acre holding, at Carriglegan, Camolin, made €1.31m, or €28,800 an acre. The price is all the more remarkable as the land contains no farm buildings, holds no road frontage and is only accessible by a laneway. It was in superb condition, having been in tillage in recent years.
Auctioneer David Quinn, who conducted the sale, said it was the best price he had ever seen for farmland with no obvious development potential. “A truly remarkable result,” he said.
The land was the property of the late Lockie and Nuala Murphy, well-known through Murphy Bros, a Case International and farm machinery dealer in Ferns. The land opened at €600,000. There were six active bidders, with the land having reached €920,000. It made a further €391,000 before the hammer finally dropped.
The land has been purchased in trust, with a local farming family believed to be involved.
