At Tuesday’s weanling sale in Roscommon Mart, shippers were in attendance and buying up the better quality bulls.

“We had over 90 weanlings on offer and there was plenty of buyers for all types, but the better-quality well-bred weanling is attracting the added premium, with over €5/kg to be got,” said mart manager Tony Conroy.

“The bull weanlings sold to a better trade than heifers, which was down to some super bulls on offer.

“It will be September before the heifer weanlings start coming out up these parts,” said Tony.

Bulls weighing between 300kg and 400kg made up the biggest share on offer, as the tops of these sold to €6/kg, with all bulls averaging €5.20/kg.

Not as many bulls weighing over 400kg were on offer, but that didn’t hamper trade.

The top third of bulls sold averaged an impressive €5.40/kg, with the middle third averaging €4.95/kg and the bottom third selling to an average of €4.14/kg.

Heifer weanlings, although not as plentiful, were still crossing the €5/kg for top lots. Farmer-type heifers weighing between 300kg and 400kg sold around the €4.50/kg mark.

Overall, there was a clearance of 92% across the 90 weanlings on offer.
