Despite beef prices falling 10% since November 2025’s peak of 662p/kg, the trade for cattle in local marts remains robust.

At Dungannon Mart last Wednesday 9 September, heavy U and R type cattle were in demand, with steers selling to £2,490 for a 690kg Angus (361p/kg), followed by £2,200 for a 560kg Charolais (393p/kg).

Heifers sold to £2,390 for a 645kg Charolais (371p/kg), with other leading prices, including a 615kg Limousin at £2,260 (368p/kg) and a 575kg Charolais at £2,140 (372p/kg).

Commenting at the sale, Trevor Whylie from Dungannon Farmers’ Mart said the trade has “remained steady across the board, with strong competition for stock especially in the calf ring”. Asked if lack of supply was driving prices, he said numbers through the mart have been steady, rather than the traditional peaks and troughs seen in previous years.

Calves

In the calf ring, Aberdeen Angus heifers at four to eight weeks old generally sold for £450 to £580, while Belgian Blues fetched around the £600 mark. Reared lumps made £670 to £1,100 for native breeds, while continentals generally sold between £800 and £1,000.
