A new breed record price of €5,900 was recorded at the Autumn Centenary Irish Moiled Cattle Society online sale hosted by Ballyjamesduff Mart recently.
Lisnolan George, a 12-month-old bull exhibited by Sean Hyland and family from Castlebar, Co Mayo, smashed the previous public auction record when he was knocked down at €5,900.
The final bid came from new Irish Moiled breeder Dermot Burke of Galloney Farm, Co Derry, who also purchased five female lots in the sale, which included the three highest-priced females, laying a solid foundation for the Galloney herd.
Overall male champion at this year’s Tullamore Show and FBD National Livestock Show, George is a son of the popular AI sire Ravelglen Owney, while his dam, Lisnolan Waterfall, is one of the most prolific cows in the Mayo-based herd, having produced several stock bulls in the past.
Females
The highest-priced and the joint-second-highest priced females in the sale were a pair of stylish 16-month-old twin maiden heifers consigned by N and M Moilies and bred by William Edwards of Tempo, Co Fermanagh. Ballyreagh Ruby 6831 sold for £3,450 (€4,133) while her twin, Ballyreagh Ruby 6832, sold for £3,050 (€3,654).
It was an exceptional sale for the N and M Moilies team, as another consignment, their cow and bull calf outfit Curraghnakeely Bluebell 0618, bred by Nigel Edwards, achieved the fifth-highest price of £2,800 (€3,354), selling to Penny Hutchinson from Downpatrick.
The last of N and M Moilies’ four entries and the youngest entry in the sale was the eight-month-old weanling bull calf, Ballyreagh Ralph, which caught the eye of many breeders.
Bred once again by William Edwards, he romped his way to £2,350 (€2,815), selling to buyer Jimmy Gilheany from Co Leitrim, who has repeatedly purchased stock in previous sales.
Drummully Annebelle was the second heifer to go under the hammer at £3,050 (€3,654), selling to Dermot Burke.
The same buyer also secured her comrade, Drummully Juliet, at £2,050 (€2,456). Both heifers were brought out by debutante exhibitor Aubrey McAlister from Newtownbutler in Co Fermanagh, who had a fantastic first outing to the society sale.
