It was a surreal sliding doors moment at 3pm on Wednesday 23 September, as two farms of the same name went under the hammer in different counties, with both eventually exceeding their guides.
At the Keadeen Hotel in Newbridge, Co Kildare, Clive Kavanagh of Jordan Auctioneers brought a 55ac farm at Thomastown, Kilcullen, Co Kildare, under the hammer.
Guided at €570,000 for the entire, the holding was also offered in the following lots:
Bidding on lot 1 concluded at €860,000, while bidding on lot 2 reached €160,000.
Opening at the combined €1.02m, the entire superseded the individual lots, with the gavel coming down at €1.06m. The sale price equates to just over €19,000/ac, which is 16% more than the average county price, according to the Irish Farmers Journal Land Report.
By sheer coincidence, at the same time in the Deebert House Hotel, Kilmallock, Co Limerick, Tom Crosse of GVM offered a 100ac residential farm at Thomastown, Kilfinane, Co Limerick for auction.
Guided in excess of €1m, the farm opened at €900,000 and was quickly bid to €1m, where it held.
After consulting with the vendor, the auctioneer returned to seek further bids, but, with no advance, the holding was withdrawn and later sold to the highest bidder.
While the agents remained tight-lipped on the eventual sale price, it is thought to be in the region of €1.2m.
